Check on Symantec's website for support of their products.

This is a common problem with Norton. Usually, this is due to
remnants (Files & Registry components) that are causing the
conflicts. Symantec has a number of technical notes about the
specific messages and resolutions.
Basically, you may need one or two stand-alone tools from
Symantec RNav.Exe or RNis--.Exe. These two tools will do
a cleanup of Symantec components. However, in some cases
you may need the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility or a Reg
patch to get around these issues. Unfortunately, there are a
number of these types of problems and no one procedure or
tool will resolve them all.
I've personally been involved in over 20 of these install quirks
with Norton 2004 products. A word of caution, be sure to have
a backup of your system as some of these tools and processes
make changes to the Registry.

you think this is bad, wait till you uninstall Norton and some of it stays
after uninstall. Symantec software has seriously gone downhill over the
years.

Go get AVG, www.grisoft.com get AVG 6, its free and updated a lot with new
virus definitions.

Another word of caution? Get away from Norton. Run. Well, almost. It has
been a nightmare for me. If you are already having problems, go to another
application.

I recently installed a trial version of Panda and compared to Norton, I am
thrilled with it. The set up and the continued usability is great.

Try this site, it has a link with a list of compatibility issues on various
software.

I have had similar experiences over the period and now I don't use
Norton Antivirus software and am trying to move away from them
completely ( I am still using Norton Internet Security). At the moment I
am using McAfee Virusscan and it works fine for me.
Another good option is AVG, which is free and works very much fine.

Agreed, I moved over to AVG. I miss the unerase on the recycle bin but
that's the ONLY thing about Norton I miss.
