XP no shut down, slow power up

Hi, When I go to shut down my computer, it freezes in
Windows is shutting down. I have to take the battery and
plug out, I know, not good.
When I turn the computer back on, it takes 4 minutes to
load my settings, whether or not i shut it down by the
removal of plug and battery way, or if it succeeds in
shutting down.
Anything I should be doing?
