XP/Microsoft Broadband Networking Error Message

I inherited an older computer with XP already on it. I then downloaded my
mircosoft wireless onto it and am now getting the following error when I
connect to the internet.

“ Issue Description:

Microsoft Broadband Networking has a known compatibility issue with this
version of Windows. For an update that is compatible with this version of
Windows, contact Microsoft Broadband Networking.
Contact Information:

Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking
Telephone: (425) 635-7172 (U.S.) or (905) 568-3503 (Canada)â€

But the link to help/a contact doesn’t work. What might I do to fix this?

Also when I connect to the internet, using ie or firefox, website content is
extremely large which means that one must scroll right to view the right half
of the sites although the formatting, the text size etc, is similar to that
of my other computer. How might I fix this?

If I acquired a used computer, even from a friend or family member,
the first thing I would do with it would be to reinstall the operating
system cleanly. You have no idea how the computer has been maintained,
what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and
spyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody
else's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and I
wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either.

I am trying to reinstall the XP home edition that came with my great aunt's
computer, the inherited computer, however F8 doesn't work when I try to agree
with the legal statement at the second or third step of installing. ESC is
the only button that seems to do anything. Suggestions?

Sorry, it's been long enough since I last installed XP that I can't
remember all the details, but here are general instructions for doing
a clean installation. One of the links below may help you:

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

on michael steven's site, it states that step 7 is:

"7. Press F8 if you agree to the license."

however, this step/F8 doesn't seem to work. ESC works but doesn't help me in
my quest to reinstall XP. the cd is orginal and came with all of the info,
such as the code that is needed in later steps. what might i do to get by
this step?/how might i fix the issue?

Turn off the caps lock.

Making sure caps was not pressed didn't do anything. However, pressing FLock
and then F8 solved the problem. Thank you for your help.

That's great news.. it read like the wrong character set was being used.
Thanks for reporting the solution.
