XP Media update, now wIndows is gone!!

I updated our Win. Med. Ed. (to what i don't know, it just said it required
an update before i could install a new printer) then when rebooted the
computer everything was gone, windows did not reload. Received "boisinfo"
error and was asked for original setup disc. I put in Home Edition disc and
loaded. Is everything we had before gone now? Is there any way to get
everything back like before?

it sounds like it just needed a driver update for the printer.
and possibly your motherboard clock battery went dead and that MAY, be why
you got the Bios info error.
you might have complicated things by inserting the restore disc, or whatever
you inserted as you didn't give much in the way of details.

When you say you put in the home edition disc and loaded, what exactly
happened?
did you format and do an install? or did it boot to the disc and perform an
automated install, if the later then it may have wiped the hd and installed a
from the factory condition, and all your data is gone.

if you did a repair install (ie installed over an existing install) then
your data may still be there, you just have to look for it. but details are
needed before we can say for sure.

please list exactly, steps you took, screen displays, messages received,
your responses etc. we prefer not to guess when responding.

Try "repair install"

How is that possibly going to help the OP? Answer: it isn't. He already has
hosed his computer and has probably destroyed all his original data. Doing
a Repair Install would just finish the job.

Nope, you have pretty much made sure it is gone. Windows Media is NOT
the same as Home Edition, and since you replaced one operating system
with another, there isn't much left, you may find some of your data
files and salvage them but the Windows Media Edition and all the
programs will need to be reinstalled.
