windows exit sound gone

winxp sp3

When I did a repair install, some of my settings got
changed. The biggy was it went to the classic startup
and shut down. I managed to change that with no
problem. It also changed my default font setting. It
went to arial. But now I've got my default back. It
also removed some of my special Toolbars on the
Taskbar. But I'm able to get those back. It also
changed my sound settings. It changed my sound back to
the default windows sound. But, there is one problem
I'm having:

Before the repair install, when windows rebooted, shut
down, or logged off, I had an exit sound. After the
repair install, I don't get that sound anymore. I've
gone into Sounds and Audio Devices, and cheched
everything, and things are fine there. I tried setting
things back to the windows default, but still no sound.

Sound is coming through the speakers OK, but not upon
shutting down. I've done all the speaker tests that
came with the drivers, and everything works. I just
don't get sound when shutting down. I have the sound
set for windows exit and windows logoff.

Would anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Thanks

Andy

In the Control Panel>Sound Devices Applet> There is a switch there to test
these sounds to make sure they work. Did you try that?
The play sound button beside the sound drop down menu at the bottom.

Yes, those tests work. I just tried something, and
Windows Logon and Start Windows don't work either.
Everything else does.

I reinstalled the audio drivers and that didn't make
any difference. Still no sound on exit/shutting down
or when windows starts.

You can check the Volume tab of sound and audio settings from control panel.
Click on the Advanced button, make sure nothing is mute especially the for
the WAV file. Then on the Sound tab, click on Exit Windows in the Program
Events list box, and click on the botton with an black triangle to the right
of the text box below the Program Event list box. If you can hear the sound,
it should be working. You can also click on the browse button to replace the
sound file with another wav file or a midi file in case there is a corrupted
system sound file or there is a problem with the speaker to play wav file.
You can then check the other tabs and make sure things are all set.

Thanks Donald for the help, but everything is fine.
There is no mute settings, and sound comes from the
black triangle. I've changed the sound many times, and
still no go. I've selected Exit Windows, Windows
Logoff, Windows Logon, and Window Start, and all sorts
of variations of those four, and still nothing. I can
get sound with all the other settings there, but
nothing for exit and starting of windows.

Actually, somebody fixed it by creating a new user account and deleted the
old one. Maybe something wrong with the profile. For more reference of the
fix on my previous post. You can see the following steps.

Restore Startup and Shutdown Sounds (Line 211)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

System Sounds are missing:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it
doesn't have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value not
set), double click (Default) and delete it. If it does, check your
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.

Thanks Donald. I tried all the registry entries, and
nothing. I tried the windows help and the MS help, and
everything is fine there. I have no yellow ! and
direct-x is working fine. My drivers are up to date
and working. I have (value not set) in HKEY_USERS.

I get sound with WMP. I get sound with all the other
entries like default beep, mail, min & max, and
everything else. I just can't get sound for shutting
down and starting up.
