XP machines on Windows 2000 server

We have been in a Windows 2000 server environment for
several years with hardly any problems to note with
connectivity. All our computers have been Win98 or
Win2000. However, we purchased some new computers with XP
and I am having a very difficult time with the
connectivity. Several symptoms occur: 1. Slow start up
with establishing personal settings 2. Periodically
receive messages in applications utilizing files on the
shared network drive that state "Program not responding".
When this happens, the user must then reboot. 3. Loss of
connectivity from the network. 4. Unable to access shared
drives on the XP machines from other computers (Win98 and
Win2000). I would greatly appreciate some knowledge or
feedback on this. It has been plagueing us for some time
now.

1 - this may be a result of enhanced authentication that XP uses by default
which increases in the ack/challenge sequence a bit

2 - If you see consistency of which applications this may be interesting to
hear about. I do see this occasionally with IE.

3 - can you expand on this one

4 - make sure you don't have the firewall on by default, the workgroups may
be different and lastly you may need to ensure you have shared user
credentials on the XP machines.
