XP Networking with NT4 Server

We purchased a new Dell Dimension 3000 with XP home installed and we are
having difficultly connect all the resources on the network. Server is
running NT4 and all other computers are running WIN98. For example:

Internet access OK
Connection to Server OK - all directories and files accessible.
Connection to HP Laserjet 5000 on server OK - prints just fine.
Connection to "Spare" Computer OK - all drives and files accessible.

The following additional network resources show on the network but you
cannot access them.

Computer 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, - no access to shared drives or printers. (all shared)
Printer server connected to plotter - no access

My question is why do we have access to some resources and no access to the
other resources?

We firmly believe the problem is software related and not hardware.

thanks
Bill

Bill,

Some more detail here might be useful. Are computers 1,2,3,4,5 all Win98? What
is the "spare" computer? What error / observation do you see when "no access"?
Are the Win98 computers setup with Share-level or User-level access? Are you
using Guest, or non-Guest accounts, on the server?

You might want to review the Microsoft white paper on file sharing between all
operating systems:

Thanks Chuck for the reply,

As stated all other computers running Win98SE, the "Spare" computer is the
name the Computer uses to gain access the the NT4 Network. The other
computers are configured by the User Name for the person using the
computer.ie: "Bills" for My workstation, the computer I use in my office.

All computers are setup for User-level access as determined by the login
rights to the network. All users are currently set-up to have access to the
full domain with full access.

All users login in using there assigned name to access the network. Except
for the new computer which only has required a user name to access the
network resources of the server and workstations. After you apply the users
name and password, all you see are the workstation you logged in to and the
printers attached, but you are denied access the files and printers.

Since I wrote the last message, I went home and got my Laptop to try to
connect to the company NT network. Laptop running XP Home SP2 also. Same
indication when I install the new network on the laptop, I can access all
files and printers directly on the server, but none of the other computers
allow access, although they are all shown on the network.

We are still trying....

Bill,

If this isn't a permissions issue, I'd bet you have a browser conflict. Run
"browstat status" from both the NT Server, and the XP computer. You can't run
browstat on Win98 unfortunately. Compare the results.

Is the NT server running as a domain controller? If so, you need to join the XP
clients properly.

Thanks Chuck,

I'll try the browstat program tomorrow on the xp system and the nt system.
I read your blog you supplied and it sounds like that this is our problem.
I'll let you know what we find out tomorrow.
