XP logon screen problem

I have been running XP Home with two user accounts.
Today, when turning the PC on, the XP logon screen
displayed as normal but with no user accounts on the right
hand side of the screen available for logon to XP.

Obviously, I am unable to logon to troubleshoot and
determine the cause of this error. Is there an "easy" way
to recover the accounts for the logon screen so that I can
access the PC and beging the problem solving?

I have tried booting in safe mode and that did not fix the
problem.

When the screen appears, press CTRL-ALT-DEL....you may have access to the
admin account and enter that way
