XP Login Freezes

Sometimes when logging onto windows with the "Use Welcome Screen" option my computer freezes. This only happens when the mouse cursor is over either the password field or the user name, when I move the cursor to the background area I can login just fine. With the cursor over the password box/user name it freezes the computer rendering the mouse and keyboard non-functional. This leaves me with no course of action but to hit the power button and let the computer go through it's shut down sequence. Is there any fix for this besides using the classic logon screen? I consider myself very knowledgeable in Windows operating systems 3.1 all the way up to XP but this has me stumped, little help please?

Done and done, it's something in XP. It does this after clean install and it does after all the windows updates, it does it on any graphics driver that I have trie
