I'm running XP professional and I just added a security patch for
Windows media player 10,

now my system just logs in and then logs out staright away, this
happens in both safe an regular mode.

There seems to be no way for me to get in and see what the problem is.

not that I'd prolly know.........

Please Help.

Amin.

I think I'm hitting exactly the same problem as you :(

Rebooted machine earlier today (I think security updates were installed
over the w/e - I know it was completely up to date re Windows Update as
I manually ran this before rebooting) and now I get no logon screen -
just the 2 tone blue screen with top and bottom bars and the XP logo
close to the middle. Like you, booting in safe mode seems to have no
effect (even booting safe to command prompt is ignored and presents the
'useless GUI'. Booting to previous working ... is also exactly the
same. Ctrl-Alt-Del is completely ignored.

I have this machine setup for access using Remote Desktop - this looks
like it is working and then logs out again immediately.

In desperation I've unplugged all unrequired periphs, etc. etc. and now
am at a loss as to what I should try next - It seems using the recovery
option from the install DVD is the only possibility but I'd really
rather not do that yet as I've had less than pleasurable experiences
with this in the past.

Any ideas are welcome ...

I am having the same issue. All was well with my machine. I logged off
properly and shut down my computer system and actually turned off the power
because we had a very severe thunder storm. When I attempt to log in I get
up to the screen where I choose my account and use my password it looks like
it starts to log in and then immediatily logs off. I have attempted to fully
reboot including turning off power and back on same thing I tried to us F8 to
get to last know good log on and still the same thing happens I enter my
password and it imediatily logs me off. I have received a virus scan alert
Mcaffee Activeshiedl has detected a virus on your computer we recommend that
you use the scan feature to scan all drives of your computer for viruses.
How can I get to a place to be able to do a scan ? how can I get to a dos
prompt ? and then what do I enter to run a virus scan? Please help asap I
need this system up and running? Thank you in advance to anyone who can help

Finished up doing a recovery install and things are sort of fine again
- as fine as they ever are after a revovery install. Tried a few
things (replacing system files) at the recovery console (which worked)
but eventually decided it just wasn't worth the messing about. So,
I'll never know what happened ...

Good luck to others who hit this.
