Can not log into XP Home Ed after running updates

G

Guest

I have a PC (Dell Inspiron 2650 WinXP Home no SP) that was infected by
several viruses.
Norton Antivirus 2002 was installed on the pc and was unresponsive. I had
to use a tool from Symantec to uninstall Norton. After this I rebooted the
pc and it came up ok, then I installed Trend Micro Internet Security 12. I
ran this product, scanned the drive and it found and removed many viruses. I
recieved several notices from Trend that it was blocking malicious network
traffic that was due to a vulnerability which needed a patch. At this point
everything else is still working fine.
I upgraded the OS to SP2 and rebooted the pc. No problems.
I go to the "Microsoft Update" site and retrieve updates that are needed,
there are 73. I begin the download, it downloads and installs all but 2, one
for Office XP SP3 (I didn't have the CD) and Media Player 10 failed.
After these install it needed to reboot so I said yes.
Now when the pc boots up I get the user name screen, where you have to
select which user to sign on as. I select the only user name available and
it begins to log in, then I see the wallpaper, then it logs out.
Tried rebooting and the same thing happens. I have tried starting in safe
mode and safe mode with networking the same thing happens.
I have "administrator" and "amanda" for my user selections when starting in
safe mode, I have tried both.
No matter what I do, I log on, it says "loading your personal settings" then
it says Logging out "saving your settings" and it happens almost instantly,
there appears to be no way of interrupting this.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Thank you very much!
John

I forgot to add... I followed the link you left for the wsaupdater.exe...
I'm not sure that this file was removed, the instance it describes does not
really pertain to me, would you happen to know any other times that this
problem may occur?
Thank you,

Do you have access to a CD burner? If you do, could you make a BartPE
bootable CD with your Windows XP CD using the directions provided from the
BartPE website.

Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Once you have created a BartPE Bootable CD, please post back and I will give
you a more detailed method on how to correct this problem.

You're Windows XP CD must have Service Pack 1 or higher integrated into the
Windows XP CD before you can make the BartPE Bootable CD.

If your Windows XP CD does not contain Service Pack 1 or higher then you
must integrate/slipstream the Service Pack. Here is a program that can help
you integrate Service Pack 2.

The system boot drive letter may have changed and causing this happen which
can be corrected by using a BartPE CD. I posted a response from your other
post about creating a BartPE CD. If you could created the BartPE CD then we
can check a few things out in the registry that may be causing this.

You can look over this article:

I have created the boot cd, I believe that it is working correctly (able to
boot) but when it comes up, I log on and the same thing happens.
Am I jumping the gun here?

Ready for the next step, thanks again for all of your help.

Hi John,

Start the computer with the BartPE Bootable CD. When you are in the BartPE
Environment go to:

Start > Run > Regedit.exe

When regedit opens, highlight "HKEY_CURRENT_MACHINE". Now go to the "File"
menu and select "Load Hive". Navigate to:

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\config"

and select the 'Software' file. The 'Software' file will have no file
extension. Name the hive "MyMachine" when asked.

Now Navigate to:

[HKLM\MyMachine\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

Locate "Userinit" key in. Ensure the value for "Userinit" is:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe,

Note: Make sure the comma (,) is included at the end of userinit.exe.

If the "Userinit" key is missing the create the key. Right click in the
right-hand pane and select New > String Value. Rename the key to "Userinit".
Double click "Userint" to enter:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe,

Note: Make sure the comma (,) is included at the end of userinit.exe.

Now highlight [HKLM\MyMachine] and go to the 'File' menu and select "Unload
Hive".

Restart your computer, remove the BartPE CD and hopefully you will be able
to log on. If you cannot, please post back and we will try another solution
that I know of.

Good Luck.
