XP - Upgrade-Installation at least simply does not work !:
(I can not remember any Windows-Update in the past that did, in fact :-|
I evaluated this on an Athlon/A7V-System with little more on it than
NT4 (SP6) and Office 2000.
After the Upgrade-Installation
(1) Office 2000 worked for admin only. All kinds of office2000-Install-jobs ,
including first-time-userlevel-"install" lead to the to the
"Windows-Fileprotection-Request" to insert the XP-CD (KB 298500)
In Addition there were severe CD-ROM-Problems
(1.1) Volume-Labels were no longer displayed until windowsupdate
(1.2) DMA did not work, only PIO
(1.3) Office1.cab could not be read. KB 299774 contradicts to KB 298500.
KB 314810 (user defined systemstart) did not help.
All Problems do not show up after doing a baremetal reinstall.
This is bitter - I guess it is not the state to expire NT4-Support yet.
