David, I am glad things have worked so well for you and
the six computers you maintain. How ever not everyone
has had the same experience.

When I upgraded to XP, I was not made aware that most of
the software programs that ran on on my previous platform
(ME), including Microsoft Office 2000, would not run on
XP, hence I have had to apply patches, upload/download
new drivers, buy new software, and reload almost all of
my software programs that are no longer compatible under
XP. In disclaimers they (MS) have stated that many these
issues are by design.

I am sure that once I work with this version of winodws
more, get my computer reconfigured, reload my software
programs and bring stability back to my operating system
I will again be neither extremely satisfied or extremely
dis-satisfied with the windows platforms. thank you for
the message though, you input ia appreciated.

Hope you are having a wonderful day.

Microsoft Office 2000 works 100% with Windows XP with no patches or
special configuration settings needed. Period.

I have yet to discover a single piece of software that I used with
earlier versions of Windows that will not work with Windows XP. I
know there are some, but nothing that I use is in this category. I
don't have an exact count of the individual applications that I
currently have installed but my "Program Files" folder is 2 gb in size
and contains 15,576 files in 1,187 folders so there is a fair bit.

Included in my software are "ancient" applications such as Word
Perfect 5.1 for DOS, which works flawlessly under XP.

Your problems are almost certainly being caused by something other
than software compatibility. Perhaps if you could describe some of
the specific issues you have encountered and the names of the
applications that had these problems then we could help you to resolve
them.

Good luck

Quality of the software is fine, as long as you go in with your eyes open
and with the requisite knowledge, which you seem singularly to have failed
to do.

It was an upgrade to Windows XP for God's sake, JUST AN
UPGRADE! I have upgraded many machines before and never
had the problems I did with this upgrade. I am so glad
you are so bright and have the vast knowledge that no one
else does. Maybe you should be running Microsoft instead
of Bill Gates or better yet maybe you should post your
home and work numbers here so that the 1000's of others
who are having any type of issue with XP can call you for
you superior help.

You should STILL do research about your current system's ability to adapt to
ANY upgrade. Don't fly off the handle at me because of your obvious lack of
common sense.
An upgrade to Windows XP is COMPLETELY different from an upgrade to any
other windows OS.

I have bee unable to get Microsoft Office2000 to even load on my computer
since I changed over to XP. It locks up about the middle of the load. I
don't know why this is happening but I have tried everything I know to do.
All of my other programs work fine except I did have to download some
drivers for two programs.

Just a suggestion - Office 2000 has, I believe already reached
Service Pack-3. Copy the contents of the CD to your hard
drive. Then download the necessary Service Packs for Office
2000. Then read-up on how to "Slipstream" them into your
Office install folder. There may be .MSI updates that would
help you get the application installed. After install visit the URL
below. It is the Office equivalent of Windows Update.

Best Microsoft has had so far, haven't had on blue screen of death yet with
XP, can't say the same for previous versions!

I can get XP to blue screen easily. One wrong driver setting, DX
command, or poorly-written ActiveX plugin and *POOF*!

Meanwhile, they put in so many security holes that you're probably a
zombie for Al Qaeda right now and dont' know it yet.

Let's talk about some real issues:

1. Bloat: XP is a bloated sack of shit. Explorer alone takes up ~25mb,
this is a farce. Windows applications take up an inordinate amount of
memory, it's a bad design from the ground up and M$ seems to have done
its best to make sure you can't uninstall half the shit they stuck in.
Furthermore, an XP pro install takes up over a gigabyte of space after
you've used it for a while. This is preposterous, a complete Linux
install fits on one CD, a minimal Linux install fits on a floppy.

2. The registry is a critically flawed concept, at least the way M$
has implemented it. The registry was created for marketing reasons, to
allow M$ to control the desktop and internet standards, it is a
security threat, the primary source of the need to re-install, and
slows down the system, rather than makes it faster. A much more
superior system is the use of multiple config files, and for
applications to maintain their data in their own directories. Once
again, M$ knew this, but they needed the registry for their devilish
schemes.

3. Bugs: XP is still crash-prone and many Windows applications exhibit
idiosynchratic properties. Basically, some things work only on a full
moon and if the wind is blowing in the right direction. Some of this
is bad code by 3rd parties, especially network, graphics and
internet-related applications, but Windows is extremely susceptible to
it. There are still quite a few instances where an app crash will
require a reboot of the system.

4. Security: As mentioned earlier, Windows is a magnet for viruses,
trojans and security breaches. This stems back to M$'s marketing once
again. M$ has tried to keep the system configuration obfuscated from
the user so M$ bloatware could not be removed, and M$-centric
standards couldn't be changed. To this day, Windows doesn't even have
a complete task manager, or a file browser that properly shows ALL
hidden files. Windows also doesn't have any significant network
security and file protection/system setting protection. Users can't
see what's doing what on their systems, they don't normally have a
clear way of managing all the processes, installed applications,
associations and network traffic, no wonder its so easy to take over a
windows system, or entire network!

5. Interface: Alot of things about the Windows GUI still suck, it's
still got a "slapped together" feel to it and it would really be nice
if it at least had right-click access to the start menu on the entire
desktop, rather than having to use the Start button. The way
file-associations are SOMETIMES managed is also badly designed. What's
the big idea of putting that in "folder properties"? Oh yes, that's
right, M$ marketing strikes again. M$ doesn't want you to change THEIR
file associations from THEIR bloatware.

So there you go, a few issues to discuss besides "Hey, XP doesn't BSOD
like the Hindenburg every 5 minutes anymore!"

I really need to stop doing that, but sometimes I just can't help myself
:-)

I have the full versions of both Office XP and Office 2000 running here
without any problems. Do you get any error messages when the install locks
up?

Try the install again and if the lockup occurs again, exit the install or
reboot the system and
go to Start/Run and type eventvwr.msc and press OK. Click on each of the
3 menu items in the left side window and look for any error messages that
correspond to the time the lockup occurred. If you find any, double click
the error message to see the details. At the right side of the details
dialog box, there is an icon that looks like 2 small text pages. Click this
icon to copy the details and paste it in a reply to this thread.

Did you run the Windows XP Upgrade Advisoer? Available for download
and on the Windows XP Disk. If so, you would have been infromed the sames
hardware/software you have wo't work. Or, that some software, such as MS
Office, would need to be reloaded. Win XP is a new Operating System with,
for most people, a completely new Kernel. You have to expect some
incompatblity. I'm surprised it works as well as it does with older
programs.

Win XP is more stringent on what it will allow to run. Borderline
hardware/software that ran on Win9x, will not run on XP. This is to
provide a more stable system. Drivers and patches are the responsablity
of the vendor that created the hardware/Software. Not Microsoft. MS makes
the XP specs availbable for manufacturers so they can make updates. If
they makes the updates in time and return them to MS. Ms includes them in
the new OS disk.

I am sure that once I work with this version of winodws

I will again be neither extremely satisfied or extremely

I'm sure that you will end up extremely sarisfied. Xp has been very
stable for me ( even the beta versions worked better then Win9x ). There
is a slight learnign curve with the differences between Win9x and XP.
But, for the most part, things work the same. The biggest being getting
used to a a multi-user enviroment. Some programs need a bit of tweaking
to get them to run for more then one account. This is usually a matter of
creating an icon in other users accounts, or installing a program under
each user.

Good luck and enjoy,
