XP Installation help

I am trying to install XP pro on my pc... I keep being told that it cannot
upgrade from Win 98se.... All and any adice would be much appreciated.

Also I have a 2nd HDD that was in a networked machine and I'm assuming
doesn't conform to FAT 32 system.... How do I change that so I can use it as
a slave drive?

I would hazard a guess that you have an OEM full version? If so, you should
be aware that they do not do upgrades, they are used for clean installs
only. You need a retail version to perform an upgrade.

What format is the drive using? WinXP will use FAT32 or NTFS with equal
alacrity.

Hi

Thanks for replying.... My XP is a "reinstallation CD" inc service pack
1a... I DIdn't notice that before... Does it make a difference??

I'm happy to perform a clean install and format my HDD, but do i need a boot
disk ala 98se??

To be honest I'm not sure which format it's using... bit of a novice in that
area (well most areas!!) How do i change the format to FAT 32? Can you run 2
seperate drives with differing file systems??

Also .... to be honest I'd be happy to get the drive to run as a slave on my
system with 98se.... In the BIOS it sees the drive but when I go into my
computer it's not there??

Hi Andy,

Sounds like:

1) It's an OEM disk, so clean install is the way you'll have to go. Most are
bootable, but if not you can always use a Win98 boot disk and load CD
support, then run winnt.exe from the I386 folder.

2) It may be an NTFS drive, and Win98 won't read it when installed locally,
only over a network. If this is the case, after installing WinXP the drive
should be readable, as it can read either format or a combination thereof
with ease.
