Removeable Storage options

M

MedRxman

When trying to access "Removeable Storage" my PC reboots.
Accessing as follows:
Start
Cobtrol Panel
Administrative Tools
Storage
removeable storage.

As soon as I click on "removeable storage" the PC reboots.

The PC is dual boot with Windows 98SE and Windows XP Pro.
The WIn XP Pro is formatted as FAT 32.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

BL

Hello Med,

Do you recall any significant change before this type of "abend" started happening?

To start the hunt for the cause, do 3 things.

Do a sanity check. RUN MSCONFIG.
Look at the Services tab. Look at Removable Storage service. Make sure it is selected (checked) & shows status running.

See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc<enter>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred.
Double click---the information "may" give a clue.

Right Click the My Computer icon on desktop. Select Properties.
Next, select Advanced. Look for a block that says Startup and recovery. Review the settings in the System failure block.
Write an event to system log should be Checked (selected).
Automatically restart should be OFF (not checked).

Hello Maurice,
Thanks for replying:

Ran MSCONFIG
Removable Storage Service was checked but "STOPPED"

Checked advanced properties in computer properties and unchecked
the auto restart and verified the write event was checked

I then rebooted the PC and tried to access the removable storage again and
this time got the BSOD with the message Bad Pool Header and a STOP
0X00000019:

Below is a copy of the event viewer message
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Event Type: Error
Event Source: TrueVector Service
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5007
Date: 3/26/2006
Time: 6:37:27 PM
User: N/A
Computer: DADDYBERYLXP
Description:
TrueVector engine: File "D:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\IAMDB.RDB" was corrupt and
has been copied to "D:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\xDB5.tmp". File
"D:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\IAMDB.RDB" was corrupt and has been deleted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FYI.. I do not have an issue accessing "Removable Storage on my laptop" and
when I checked the services in MSCONFIG, it was checked and also stopped.

I came across this error when a DriveImage 7 image attempt failed for not
being able to write a file and one of the possible reasons was a
"Permission" issue. When I researched permissions in the Help files it gave
instructions to check the removable storage and that is when I noticed the
problem.

My image situation is OK since I use Drive Image 2002 (Just can't back up to
External USB drive..No Biggie.

I'll probably never again have need to use the "Removable storage" section
of the Administrative tools but was interested in correcting a wrong.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Beryl

Let's have you do this.
From Start menu, select RUN option, type in
SERVICES.MSC <press Enter>

Scroll down to Removable Storage service. Highlight & click on it.
If it shows as stopped (on upper left) , press the Start the service button.
Now, on the Startup column, do a right click, select Properties. Look at the Startup block (drop down list).
Click on the down arrow. Select Automatic. Press OK when finished.

As to the Stop error, hold off about any quick fix. Let's see if it happens again in the future.
This is what one section at MS Technet says.

BAD_POOL_HEADER

This is, perhaps, the most obscure error message. In most cases, if you receive this error, it's related to the most recent change you've made on your system. Try undoing the change to get rid of the error.

Ran SERVICES.MSC, scrolled down to Removable Storage, clicked on it and in
the left hand corner pressed the "start Service" button and immediately got
the BSOD with the Stop error again.

I researched the stop error and it shows to possibly be a sound card error.

As I originally indicated I have a dual boot with Win98SE, On the Win98
Drive I have installed a Montego Turtle Beach Sound Card. When I set up the
Dual Boot, Win XP Pro used generic sound drivers (that work well). Win XP
nor I installed the TB sound drivers. At least I did not. I know for a fact
that the TB Sound card and drivers are not compatable with XP because I
originally tried to upgrade my system to XP and the compatability wizard
warned me of the non supported TB. That is when I let XP set up a dual boot
on a second hard drive in my system.

The XP installation meets my needs which allow me to run Quic ken 2005 which
was a large resource hog in WIN98 and created many issues. I use all my
financial programs on XP and have no problems other than the Removable
Storage issue, Other than this crash, never another problem(yet).

Beryl,

As long as your system is usable, let's have you stop trying the services management module.

It is very strange that a sound card would somehow affect this service.
