Hi, my pc used to be able to dual boot Win 98SE and Win XP. Yesterday
something went wrong and the computer just shows a blinking cursor. So I
boot up with a Win 98 boot disk and did a:\sys c:. Now I can boot up but
always boot up in Win 98. There is no more the boot menu for me to
choose Win XP.

Win 98SE is on d: (fat32) and Win XP is on e: (fat32). The c: is just a
file/work storage area, fat 16.

Plse help!

Thanks!

try booting to the windows xp install media, go thru the setup instructions
but select the r for repair an existing windoes xp with the recovery
console. read the messages carfully becuase it might be worded differently
but it is the recovery console you are looking for. after you are there,
type fixboot and see if it works for you. you might need to type fixmbr then
fixboot but try getting away without having to do the fixmbr first.

it should work now.

Thanks for the solution . I already did a repair installation fom the Win XP
cdrom. This "R" option is found after we agree (F8) to the licensing.

It took a long time (45 min) to repair. Looks more like re-installing to me,
only it did not ask me for user names. Each user desktops appears as per
normal after the whole installation was done.

Next time will try the "fixboot" method.
