XP install

I need some advice.

A guy from work has given me his PC (duron 1300, 256mb )

He started to install winXP-pro and half way through, for what ever reason
he turned off the computer.
I thought it would be a case of getting a boot disc and trying again.

I can't access the bios.
It gets as far as the XP start up screen and tries to continue installing,
it says 39 mins to completion and freezes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is the worst possible scenario putting a new HD in?

First thing: Get an official XP Pro install CD. Then, try to start a new
install of XP pro (re-format hard drive).

If it still fails, then check for BIOS updates.

Just format the drive using the xp cd(boot to it) or floppy boot disks, then
reinstall xp.

I cant get acces to the bios, How do I re-format the hard drive,

When the computer boots it try's to install from where it left off.

It boots from CD, and I can't change it.

*Warning - you will lose all data*

Boot to a win9x floppy boot disk, run Fdisk, delete partitions, create new
partitions, reboot to boot disk again, run format, (or reboot to xp cd,
format, install xp). Get boot disk here: www.bootdisk.com

I cant get the the floppy to boot as I cannot get acess to the bios.

I have dowloaded from bootdisk and it still boots from CD (D)

I know its a pain, I am out of my depth trying to fix it.

Why can't you access the BIOS? Have you tried watching the screen
during POST to see if there is a message stating how to enter setup?

There are many different combinations of key presses that are used to
enter the BIOS setup - and depends a great deal on the make of PC.
Some systems require pressing "DEL" during POST to enter setup.
Others are different. Compaq for example uses F10, Toshiba F2, and
so on.
