XP ME Install Troubles

J

jw

My friend has emailed me saying he is having a problem trying to
install a few regular versions of XP (SP3) on a so-called ME or MCE
model of hardware (HP MEDIA CENTER).

I told him I would ask if anyone knows if he needs a version of XP
specifically tailored to his hardware. I know there was a version of
XP called XP ME, long gone.

Anyone?

There's XP, and then there's ME, but never a mix of the two. There IS an XP
MCE (Media Center Edition), though. So is your friend trying to install XP
over ME as an upgrade, or is he trying to change versions by installing
another version of XP over XP MCE? What are the exact error messages that
he's getting trying to do this?

No operating system is "tailored" to hardware; that's what manufacturer's
drivers are for. You need to know what make and model PC or motherboard he
has, plus any add-in cards, printers' etc., in order to have the proper
drivers and software ready for after the installation/upgrade.

ME = Millenium Edition; hit the market as retail in september 2000.

But I suspect the OP is not talking about that, his question is a bit
confusing.

According to this page:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...3+release+notes"+mce&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

.... it is recommended first to install SP2, and *then* install SP3 on
PCs running Windows XP MCE (Media Center Edition).

Also, if that HP has an AMD processor, there will be other issues. See
this page:

Not necessary, assuming SP2 is installed first.

XP ME never existed. :)

Windows XP is an operating system. Windows ME (Millenium Edition) is an
earlier operating system. It came out after Windows 98 SE and before
Windows XP.
