IE 6 Repair??

J

Jerry

My friend, in another state, uses a Dell installed Windows Xp, SP #2, Media
Center Vision (I use Windows Me).

I’m trying to help him with a problem. He cannot access Internet Explorer.
I told him to follow the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378 to
repair IE 6 problems. When the process asks him to enter a disc, he enters
his Operating System Xp Media Center disc. When he does, he has gotten two
messages, at different times.
#1 Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to
the dll cache. Insert Windows Professional CD Rom.
#2 Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced
by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore
the original versions of those files. Insert Windows Xp Professional CD now.

Now, the immediate confusion is in both messages, it says to insert Xp
Professional CD. First, that is not the version he is using and second, he
does not have that disc.

What should he do next? Remember, I do not use Xp so my familiarity with it
is where it might me similar to Me. And, I am trying to help him via the
phone.

Thanks,
Jerry

As in no windows OS cd at all...If not,the reinstallation files might be on a
partition in the hd,tap F8 at start-up & the option to reinstall would be
present.
Otherwise,if a windows media center cd exists,go to run, type:cmd In cmd
type:Sfc /Scannow Install WMC cd,exit the menu screen. This replaces corrupt
OS files.Once its thru,type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree,type:EXIT Restart pc.

What does "cannot access Internet Explorer" mean? Post any error messages
in their entirety.

Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

Is it running IE6 or IE7? (I know, but please double-check.)

What anti-virus application is installed? Is its subscription current?

Do you speak like you write? Does anybody understand anything you say?

Cannot access Int. Exp. means, a message says this page cannot be displayed.
The other error messages are my #1 an #2.

My friend is a novice in PC, and has told me he has not kept up with patches.

He is running IE 6

His anti-virus is Mcafee and it is current.

Whatever version of XP he has he should put the disk in the drive.

XP may ask for the disk if you do something like change the language
settings or install or remove a windows component. Sometimes you need to
browse to the location of the file. The file name appears in the "File Name"
field.

IMHO, give up trying to help him on the phone. Since he is a novice you will
likely spend hours getting nowhere since you know nothing of XP and he
probably doesn't know what he is looking at. I speak from experience here.

Have him ask someone locally to look at the machine, unless he can get on
the internet and ask himself.

Probably not the solution you want, but it will save your sanity.

Repairing or reinstalling IE isn't going to help.

Send him the following:

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks for your detailed response. I am assuming you might think the message
to ask for the Professional Xp disc is caused by a hijack issue. I can tell
you my friend is not good on checking for updates and virus issues. So, I am
going to try and help him go through these checks and see what develops.
Your comment about his problem is not an IE repair issue was important to
hear.

Thanks,
Jerry

Hello again -

I am afraid, but I have a little egg on my face. I just found out that my
friend now thinks he has Int. Exp. 7. I am asking him to check again. I
asked him to check his Add/Remove list to see what is listed. Is there
another way to check?

If he does have I.E. 7, is there another suggestion to fix his problem?
Also, I asked him to tell me exactly what his error message says. It says,
"Internet Explorer cannot display this web page."

Open IE and click on help for IE level.

The problem is Int. Exp. will not open, so he cannot click on any of its
options.

Go into control panel---add/remove---on left side click 'windows components'
Then, deselect IE. reboot and go back
and reselect IE.

Without knowing, I assume when I deselect IE, the IE name will appear in the
Windows components again to select it.
Also, can I reselect IE without the use of a Windows CD disc? It would seem
by deselecting IE, I would, in effect, remove it from the PC.

You will NOT remove it from your PC. This is merely to activate or
deactivate a Windows program.
