I set up a new computer and connected it to my network, then I downloaded XP
updates and a Virus protection update. the computer Crashed.

I used the XP restore disk and started over again. This time I was very
careful to follow all instructions, but the computer crashed again. Now it
appears that the HDD is toast.

I have loaded XP on a new HDD, ( with no internet Connection) and now I am
looking for a way to download the XP security updates to a CD on a safe
computer and then downloading on the new computer's XP. I don't wish to
waste another HDD.

I somewhat doubt your HDD is toast from a SP install. I had a simila
issue on a stand alone. I found it to be virus related though. Not to
sure if this relates to your issue, but this is what I did.
Remove from your network. Install XP, and then install viru
protection. Nortons will do the trick. Connect to the net and downloa
virus updates immediately. Once this is done, download your SP's
