I have recently purchased a new laptop that came complete with XP Home and
it is described as version 2002, Service Pack 2.

I have removed anything remotely connected with Norton and use AVG as my
anti virus application.

My problem is that start-up seems to take forever ........... it would be
incorrect to describe it as a 'hang' but its very close ..... not what I
expected

If anyone has any ideas, please post

many thanks in advance

Open msconfig and uncheck everything that you don't really need to run at
startup. This will not stop you from launching the application if needed but
may very well speed up your boot time.

Start>run, type in msconfig and click ok,next click on the tab that says
"startup".

Being that this is a new computer I have no doubt that their is alot of junk
running at startup.

It could be that new program you installed uses a lot of system
resources, therefore causing your computer to slow down. Try going into
your task manager and see how much memory it is using. Also, you can try
uninstalling the program and see if start-up improves or what not. Hopes
that helps a little bit.

Many thanks for your assistance guys

What cured it was article 841571 from MS knowledge base.

"Your pointer changes to an hourglass when you hold it over the taskbar for
a few minutes after starting your Windows XP-based computer"
