Upgrade XP Home to XP Pro

Todd

I recently purchased a netbook that came loaded with XP Home. I want to
upgrade it to XP Pro so that it can connect with my server at the office.
Where would a purchase a downloadaable upgrade of XP Pro?

You can't purchase a downloadable upgrade, and you wouldn't want to. You
*need* the CD.

You have to buy an Upgrade Edition CD, and do the Upgrade Install.

In the event that you have to re-install from scratch (such as hard disk
failure) you can use that Upgrade CD to reinstall. You just need to have
on hand a qualifying CD of a previous version of windows, such as XP Home or
Win98 SE. You only need that disk for a few moments - you will NOT need to
install the previous version.

However, if your system came with a "system restore" CD rather than a
bootable XP install CD, it won't work this way, and if you can't find a
qualifying CD that you can borrow, you *will* have to reinstall it and then
run the upgrade install.

The upside of that is that "system Restore" CDs also include the drivers,
which are absolutely essential, and will be the same for XP Home and Pro.
So, you might also want to cruise the manufacturer's site, download all the
drivers, and burn them to CD for the day that you do need them.

There are no downloadable updates (and if there were, it would be a
very bad choice, since it would be very likely that you might later
need the CD). You'll need to buy it at a store or on a web site.
