upgrading xp home to xp pro

Guest

I have a HP notebook with came with xp home sp2. I installed the XP Pro
Upgrade cd from microsoft (not the full version cd). It now gives me a dual
boot option into xp pro or home. If I choose xp pro, it gives an error of
"system32\hal.dlll error file missing or corrupt and
If I select xp home it gives a system32\configsys error file missing or
corrupt message.
this cut down xp pro upgrade cd doesnt seem to work or am I doing something
wrong?

Sounds like you did not "upgrade" but did a parallel install.
Did you originally (while in Windows XP Home) put the upgrade CD into the
drive and choose "upgrade"?

In any case - you may be able to perform a repair installation to remedy the
situation.

Thier simply is no "upgrade" from home to pro,the upgrade is for older windows
OS....To install pro from xp home, install xp pro cd,boot to xp pro cd,select,
install xp,new copy,delete the partition (home),create one,then xp formats
and performs a clean installation.

Andrew E., our resident troll, persists in posting the same nonsensically
erroneous tripe, no matter how many times he gets corrected, and no matter
how many times the correction points him to a Microsoft page stating exactly
the opposite. And in true troll fashion, he neither admits his error nor
defends his completely mistaken point of view.

Yeah, I was scratching my head on that one! I even looked at

Is he plonkworthy?

Andrew,

When you get one wrong (like this one) the first time - and it is proven to
you that it was the incorrect assumption - repeating it over and over does
not make it true.

Examples of your incorrect statement - over and over:
http://snipurl.com/s45j

The same answer I continue to give to prove to you that your assumption is
completely and totally false:

Andrew E. has been incorrect about this many times - but refuses (or perhaps
cannot comprehend) the fact that upgrading from Windows XP Home to Windows
Professional is supported and one of the easiest paths to follow.

Windows XP supported upgrade paths
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292607

That article clearly shows a path from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP
Professional Edition..
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292607#XSLTH3140121123120121120120

Even external (non-Microsoft sponsored) confirm this:

What are the supported upgrade paths to Windows XP?
http://www.jsifaq.com/subI/tip4300/rh4349.htm

It would be nice - if just once - you responded to a rebuttal of your
incorrect answer and told us why you believe what you believe.
