If I install a full version of Windows XP Pro over and existing installation
of Windows XP Home Edition will it completely overwirte it or will it give me
the option to just do an upgrade.

Dont know where the 1st post by ferguson (mvp),gets his information, but
microsoft has never posted that xp home is upgradable to xp pro thru windows
explorer....The only way you'll ever find @ microsoft.com,is to boot to xp
pro
cd,select install xp,delete the partition (xp home),create one, then let xp
format
& perform a "clean xp pro install"....The "upgrade" is for older windows OS

Where do you get *your* information? As usual you are completely
utterly clueless! Please post *your* links to Microsoft articles that
state that XP Home cannot be upgraded to XP Pro. Of course, you have
been asked many times to substantiate your claims and you never have so
I doubt that you will do so now.

You will need to use a retail version of Windows XP Pro to do the
upgrade. OEM versions wipe (format) the partition to lay down a fresh
copy of the OS; that is, you cannot upgrade using an OEM version. So
decide if you want to spend more money on a retail version of Windows XP
Pro or if you are willing to move your data, configuration, and other
files to somewhere else, do the fresh OEM install, and then bring back
your files. With the OEM install, you'll have to reinstall all your
applications. With the retail version, the current applications should
continue to work but you'll pay more for the retail version.

".... Thru Windows Explorer....?" .... Nor has Mark ever made any such
claim. Just what medications are you forgetting to take?

And that, of course, is a complete and deliberate lie.

If it's a retail license, you can do it either way; the choice is
yours. OEM installation CDs, however, by design cannot perform in-place
upgrades; you'd have to format the hard drive and perform a clean
installation.

You can upgrade from any Windows. You can even upgrade from XP Pro to XP
Pro. You *CAN'T* however upgrade from 16 bit Windows to 32 bit Windows (in
theory it's possible if you upgrade to Windows 95 first, but it's
guaranteed to screw up your system).

That said, it's not necessarily recommendable to ever upgrade a Windows
system. It tends to cause more problems than it's worth. There's some
specific situations where it's your only choice, but other than that,
formatting and installing from scratch will typically give you fewer
headaches in the long run. But that doesn't mean it's your only option.
