XP home won't let me install software

WhenI try to load software from a CD I get a dialog box titled:16Bit Windows
Subsystem; that says: C:\Windows\System32\AutoExec.NT. The System File is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose close
to terminate application.
Then gives me an option to close or ignore.
The software is supposedly 32 bit. I am pretty sure my computer is 32 bit
as well. What does this mean and what can I do about it?

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based
program

I am still having difficulty. Step 14 tells me to locate a file in windows
explorer and copy another file to it. Where is Windows Explorer? I am
looking in MY Computer but cannot find the file 'Config.nt' that I just made
in the Notepad. Nor can I find the %SYSTEMROOT%\system32 folder I am
instructed to copy it to.

David,
You can access Windows Explorer at: Start/All
Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer. You normally will find the system32
sub-folder at C:\WINDOWS\system32 [where C is your boot drive-if not, change
the letter to match your drive]. %SYSTEMROOT%\system32 is just a path
shortcut you can enter At Start/Search to search for that file if you wish
to do so. As to the Config.nt file which you made in Notepad, you should
have used "File/Save as" in order to save it to a location you could
remember such as My Documents. Re-open Notepad again to see if your entries
still exist; if so, save them to My Documents. If not, recreate the file and
save it properly to a location you can find later.

The installer program though may be 16 bit

Look in the C:\Windows\repair folder for the backup copy of auotexec.nt
(and of config.nt) and copy them out to Windows\system32 (make sure you
do a copy, not a move and lose them for another need)
