I have xp and when I start to install some programs a 16 bit window subsystem
pops up saying

C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for
running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. Choose 'close' to
terminate the application.

close ignore
when i hit ignore it still don't install

What can I do to install my programs?

This can be a couple of things:

1. The combination of the Avast anti-virus program and XP SP2:
