Installing Problems - Help Me

Ever since I installewd Service Pack 2, I get an error while trying to
install some software. It's a '16 bit Windows Subsystem' error that reads:
'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to
terminate the application.'
Is there an updated or uncorrupted version of this file that I can download
that will allow me to run/install any of this older software?

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program

Also can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and
creating registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.

There is a reserve copy in windows\repair which you can copy across.

This may arise from a Trojan, so scan with AV and up to the minute
definitions file. Also it has been reported that Avast AV can itself
have this effect under SP2. Either would result in the trouble
resurfacing after a reboot
