XP Home Upgrade over XP Home

I had a system crash on an Win ME system - that could not be recovered because of bad System Restore CD's from HP; HP couldn't give or even sell me replacement recovery system CD's; I couldn't buy a new version of ME anywhere. I needed data off of it ASAP so I loaded XP Home from another computer that I had and recovered my data. Now I want to buy a retail version of XP Home or ideally an upgrade to XP Home to replace the OS I had on there for ~ 48 hours. Can a retail version of XP Home be installed over an existing XP Home installation? Since I had a legitimate version of ME on there until it crashed - can I use an XP Home upgrade - and if so - will XP Home upgrade actually install over another version of XP Home?

I think the answer to both of your questions is yes. You will have to do a
repair install with the new disk. Jym

Of course you can't! ME's gone, you don't qualify for the upgrade - you've
got no qualifying product! You can't use XP Home as a qualifier for XP Home.
You must purchase a retail version and install it clean.

After another read , I think you are saying that you do not have a Win 98
product disk . You would have to have that for a qualifying product to
install a XP upgrade disk. Buy a retail disk and do a repair install. Jym

you should be able to the upgrade CD will work as you already have XP
installed since you had ME on the computer before you qualify for the
upgrade

Don't know why you could not find ME I found dozens of places that had ME!
Price was pretty steep at 85.00!

All you had to do was boot using a dos boot disk that you could have made on
almost any computer to get the data off or just pulled the drive out and put
it in another computer!

Short story Yes you can buy a XP home upgrade and do a repair install to be
legal!

I even found the ME CD only for 30 buck!

Greetings --

You should be able to use a legitimate copy of WinXP Home to
perform a repair installation:
