XP Home Upgrade License on new drive

I had to replace a crashed drive in my laptop. I've loaded my original
Windows 98, and now want to re-use my xp upgrade that was used on the old
dead drive. Will the upgrade recognize that it's the same computer? Will it
try to register on-line, and then recognize it's the same computer? How do I
get permission? Unfortunately, my dial-up software can't load because it says
it needs an update to 98 before it can load. So, I can't get online until I
load the xp upgrade.

Thanks

You don't need to install 98 first if you have a 98 CD. You can boot from
the XP CD and insert the 98 CD when prompted for a qualifying Windows CD.
You never need to register, but you will need to activate. When you get to
the activation part of the install, you can choose to activate by internet
or by phone call. Choose the method that applies to your situation.
See my clean install web page for detailed instructions on the XP setup.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

As I said in my post, I've already reloaded 98 and programs. Don't want to
wipe all that out to do a clean install if I don't have to.

Repeat: Will the xp upgrade reactivate because it knows it's the same
computer with a different drive, or am I going to be stuck calling Microsoft
and being on hold for nine years?

You should be able to activate using the online method. The only time
you will run in to trouble is if you have changed a considerable amount
of hardware.

Like I said, "You never need to register, but you will need to activate.

activation procedure is detailed in the Clean install link I provided, and
it is the same for an upgrade.
