xp home -unable to logoff, turn off or restart

Just yesterday I went through my logoff procedure. I hit the start tab than
I moved to turn off the computer. It woudn't turn off. When I tried to turn
off or restart it remained where it was.

I hit the on/off switch on the tower (SONY VAIO) and the system would go
into hibernate. But once I hit the "on" switch it woul go right to the desk
top.

I would greatly appreciate someone's experience with resolving this problem

thank you

I have the same problem with xp pro. After I click logoff it just sits and I
have to power down the computer. Did you recently install Norton AV?

Joe-

No, I didn't recently install Norton AV. I've been using Symantec which has
been serving me well. I managed to get an error message off yesterday and the
system finally shut down. I don't know if it is a fluke so I'll navigate a
bit more in the microsoft support section.

Thank you for your response
