XP Home SP2 Routing and Remote Access service not starting.

Mike

My desktop computer is running XP (home) SP2 . For several months now I have
been connecting to it remotely from my laptop over a VPN. However, it now
appears the VPN isn't working. After doing a lot of checking for possible
problems I decided to run the New Connection Wizard on the XP machine. When I
select the "Accept Incoming Connections" option, I get a warning message
"Incoming connections depend on the Routing and Remote Access service which
was unable to start. For more information check the system event log.
Checking the system event log I find two errors; the first is Source: Remote
Access Event ID: 20152 "The currently configured authentication
provider failed to load and initialize successfully. The system cannot find
the path specified." The next error entry is from the Service Control
Manager Event ID:7024 "The Routing and Remote Access service terminated
with service-specific error 3 (0x3)." Help and support is very helpful
about this error; "The specified service stopped unexpectedly with the error
indicated in the message. Windows does not recognize the service's error
code."
Searching other postings I have found two others about this exact problem
but have no idea if they were resolved successfully. I have tried the
procedure outlined in Microsoft article 840686 "You cannot start the Routing
and Remote Access service on a Windows 2000 Server-based computer or on a
Windows Server 2003-based computer" but no change.

Any help much appreciated.
Mike

I got these after a quick search of EventID.com... Don't know if this will
be of help or not...

The next error entry is from the Service Control Manager Event ID:7024
"The Routing and Remote Access service terminated
with service-specific error 3 (0x3)."

This is generic message from the Service Control Manager (SCM). As its name
says, this service is actually controlling/managing the various services
running on a Windows machine. This service is responsible for starting,
stopping, checking the status of various services. When a service gets a
critical error and has to stop it will notify the SCM about this and shut
down. The SCM will then record this event with the name of the service and
the error code that the service reported before shutting down. So
potentially, any service can generate this error so one has to pay attention
to the details of the message - there is no generic cure for event id 7024.
So, understand what service is reporting the error, what is the role of that
service and how it may have been affected by the latest happenings on that
computer. The other bit of information that may be quite important in
understanding this is the error code. In many cases, you can get more
details about what that code means by using the "net helpmsg <error code>"
command. For example, for error code 2550, you can go the command prompt and
type: net helpmsg 2550 - the "translation" of this code, "The browser
service was configured with MaintainServerList=No." may give you additional
clues of what caused this event. For this example, the error code may
indicate that the Browser service, by default enabled on all Windows
computers has been configured via registry not to perform its function and
as a consequence there is no need for the service to run so it will shut
down by itself notifying the SCM. In a similar way you can try to identify
additional information about the error codes listed in the event. Search the
newsgroups for the namen of the service and the error code (again, using
this example, you can search Google groups for: "Computer Browser" 2550 and
you will find lots of links about this.

Thanks for the post Al. The problem has been resolved in another group. Same
thread title in "microsoft.public.windowsxp.configuration_manage"
Moral of the story seems to be "be careful using registry cleaning
software!"
Thanks,
Mike
