XP Home slowed down or can't even log in after apply and uninstall critical updates

Hi all:

I have a well-maintained XP Home machine which has been running great
for a long time now. This machine usually boot up fairly quickly, and
as I have some customized login screen using software such as
LogonStudio or something like that, so I didn't apply SP1 or SP2 I
believe. Recently I accidentally run the Windows Update and it started
to update my XP Home with SP1 and SP2, when I found out that I did
something wrong, I canceled the update, and rebooted the machine.
Luckily I was still able to login to XP Home (although the original
customized splash waiting screen was gone but the customized login
screen was ok), but it was really slow. So I started to uninstall those
newly installed security updates, only to find out that now I can't
even log on to the Windows! Here are my questions:

1. I don't think I have saved any "restore point" so probably can't
really store back to a certain point, in this case, is there any way
that I could restore my XP Home back to its original condition? Would
Windows "repair" work?

2. I'm thinking of just backup the current hard disk and reinstall XP
Pro on this PC (Celeron 1.3Ghz, 512MB RAM). In general I know that XP
Pro is better than XP Home because of the Remote Desktop, but for this
kind of PC (1.3Ghz), would XP Home actually run faster than XP Pro?
Also, If I'm not using this PC for Internet, do I really need to
install all those SP1 and SP2?? If I don't install those SP1/SP2
updates, would my PC boot and run faster?

Thanks!

If you're not running this computer on the internet, then how did you start
updating to SP2 ?? Letting SP2 and all security patches update your system
is a necessity if you connect to the internet.

When an update is installed from Microsoft update, as part of the
installation, a restore point is created. Try restoring using the
restore point made when the first update was applied. You can run
system restore from safe mode if you can boot into that.

If you cant boot into safe mode, the do a repair install.

Because your system is not connected to the internet there is less need
for SP2 but besides security issues SP1 corrected quite a few problems
as did SP2. I would suggest you install SP2.

SO you say that it won't be used for Internet. Does that mean you don't
plan on opening any HTML or HTM files, no e-mail, newgroups, no Windows
non-Internet software (Office, Windows Defender, ...)? You don;t care to
receive any updates on bugs dealing with the OS?

Windows Update (as well as SP1 & SP2), updated more than just Internet
related software
