If I buy XP Home Edition, will it work fine with my Epson Stylus Color 440
printer? Thanks.

Check on the Epson site to make sure they have an XP compatible driver for
it, and download it.

The only driver of this Epson is the one delivered with XP. There does not
appear to have a newer one. We loose the ability to check the ink levels.

Epson does not appear to have an XP driver, but there is a "Status
Monitor 2 v2.5bE" that's supposed to work with XP at
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/...oads&oid=14428&prodoid=9935&category=Products
that may permit you to check ink levels ("This file is used to monitor
certain Epson printer's status over different interfaces.")

It should. If not, you can always phone Epson and get what you need. I had
no problems getting Linux suport for an Epson Stylus C86 from Epson.
Despite more devices being supported by Linux than Windows, I still would
expect Epson would be more than happy to stand behind their product and
help you get it going.

Not really, no. Depending on the model, you can get ink level information
by lifting the printer lid and taking a look at the ink tanks. If they're
obscured, there's a status light on the ink reload button that will come on
when you're low/out of ink in one of the tanks. That being said, the "ink
level" indicator provided by the drivers just plain doesn't work: It
always shows full, even on a bone dry, empty ink cartridge.

Even when they work, no ink level indicator, for any printer, tells you
anything about the ink level. All it knows is how many pages have been
printed, and it makes a guess about how much ink is left, based on its
statistics for average usage per page.

It may be useful as a very rough indication of remaining ink, but that's
all. One should never rely on it.
