XP Home and Windows Update

Hello everyone,
I am looking for some help regarding a problem I am experiencing with
downloading and installing all updates from the Windows Update site. First, I
recently did a repair install (inplace upgrade) of my Windows XP Home after
installing a new motherboard, cpu, and video card. I upgraded from an Athlon
2500+ and Epox motherboard to an MSI K8T Neo2-F\FIR series board and Athlon
64x2 4200+ cpu as well as replaced my aged Geforce 5 series with a Geforce
7600 GS. Well, since doing the repair install, I haven't been able to
download or install any updates from the windows update site. The only
explanation I get is "A problem with your computer has prevented windows from
downloading and installing some updates for your computer." I have SP1 and
have attempted to install SP2 manually but that also fails after copying all
the files. I have attempted to install both the Windows Installer 3.1 as
well as the update for Background Intelligent Technology 2.0 with WinHTTP 5.1
with the same success.
When downloading, it seems windows acts as if the files are already
downloaded and goes through the verification process which goes alright then
the install process and then it tells me everything failed. I get no error
codes to google or anything of that nature so I am at a standstill. Any help
would be GREATLY appreciated as I have been pulling my hair out for 5 days
now to no avail.

Many thanks in advance,
Gordon

Hello, I was just looking around at posts and this one caught my eye. I
recently did the same upgrade to the 7600 GeForce and 1 GB ram. Whilst in the
shop there were problems with the windows update and they fixed it. Although
there not sure how but ran into further problems installing Norton. It would
install but not activate. They uninstalled Fix-It Utilities and still had
the same problem so they installed AVG which I am very happy with. I
renstalled Fix-It all goes well but when I try to update it wont
authenticate. I have contacted Vcom. manufacturer, and they are unable to
figure it out. Is it possible we have a common denominator here?? Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks, Mars

best thing for you is go ask norton how to get rid of all its logs and
everything
norton has so much stuff in it gost syntack goback an so on
just a uninstall does not get rid of the log files
norton makes 3or4 copys of the harddrive

you also need to get rid of any free 30 day av programs that came on windows

Hi all,
I appreciate all the advice and help. Thankfully, I was able to get the
system back to updating using a tool I found on the web at
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Windows_Update_Repair_Tool/1123680932/1

This program did the trick and now windows update is working as intended.
Apparently, it is caused by a bug in the WindowsUpdate stealth installer that
forces the upgrade of the WindowsUpdate .dll files itself. I wonder, if it
is a known bug, why has Microsoft not corrected the error themselves but
instead, send us all on hunts through newsgroups, googled info, etc. I hope
this will help anyone else that runs into this problem. I've added it to my
list of 'must have' XP programs since I am a tweaker and also fiddle and
repair computers for several friends. The machine this happened on was a
friends, and I even thought of having her upgrade to Vista but I am just not
confident enough with Vista itself to warrant that expense due to the
incompatabilities I've seen with hardware and older programs.

Once again, Thanks.
Gordon
