XP Home/98SE Multiple-Boot

I just upgraded from 98SE to XP Home. I did a "New
Installation", but now every time I boot up the system
asks me which operating system I want to load. I thought
that 98 would be taken off and replaced with XP.

How do I get rid of 98? Can I remove it from XP or do I
have to reinstall XP?

Kevin, you can remove everything concerning 98SE except 5 files. They
are: ntldr, cmldr, ntdetect.com, bootsect.dos and
boot.ini. You can find these by going to WinExplorer>Tools>Folder
Options. Click on Show hidden files and folders and
uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then to lose the Boot
Menu rt click on MyComputer>Select Properties>
Advanced>Startup and Recovery-Settings>Edit. Change the timeout=30 value
to 1.

One note: If he's getting rid of Win98SE, he can also delete
bootsect.dos as it's not needed except for dual booting between 98SE
and XP.

If 98SE isn't bothering you why don't you keep it? Run it as a bare
bones system. I am running both on a FAT32 system. The advantage is
that it's like having the old DOS prompt. I can read all my XP files
from 98SE and alter them. XP won't let you do certain things to the
files after it locks them. With 98SE, you can access these files
without that restriction. Of course, you have to be a bit careful.

You can access from the XP repair mode, or XP Safe Mode, but those are
still limited. If XP becomes contaminated, you can run repair software
from 98SE provided you have FAT32 on both systems. Recently, I had
trouble with a partition on XP. Using, 98SE and the old Norton
Utilities, I was able to go in a repair the partition from 98SE.
