Dual Boot Win 98se, XP Home SP2 and Vista, all on seperate drives.

Hi,

Can I get some instructions on how to run Win 98se on my IDE drive, along
with Win XP Home sp2 on one SATA hd, and Vista on another SATA hd ?
All Os's have their own drives to make it easier.

Since my IDE slot is already running two drives [ CD-ROM and the other DVD-R
],
I purchased an ATA/133 PCI card, put down the XP drivers per instructions
and as Device Manager , nothing in the yellow. Have to do the same for 98se
drive but need to get it running. The 98 drive shows up in My Computer, but
only some folders.

I understand the order on installing these OS's as well.
98 first, XP second then Vista: or the later vice versa. Is this right?

As stated, I already have 98 on a drive already, so instead of reinstalling
the other two OS's after getting 98 going, I would then just plug in my XP hd
acting as if I did a reinstallation. Is this possible?

When I installed Vista, I had to do nothing.
On boot, you are prompted to choose which OS's you want to run, that's it.

Instead of the reinstallations of XP and Vista , can I do some editing to
the boot files so all I have to do is plug in my three hd's and off I go? I
heard about this in another post here on Microsoft.

What is the best and easiest solution if any?

Thank's,

Dave

Since you have a very nicely modular setup, you could do this:
1. Install one single disk at a time and make it the primary master.
2. Install the appropriate OS (one OS per disk). This means
that each OS will run off its own drive C:.
3. When finished, make the Win98 disk the primary master.
4. Install XOSL in the Win98 partition. It's free!
5. Connect the other disks.
6. Add each OS to the XOSL menu and hide the various
partitions from each other.

With this approach you don't have to worry about the order
of installation, partition types etc. etc. Each OS will be
completely independent from every other OS. Furthermore
you can keep on booting directly into WinXP and Vista by
just disconnecting the other two disks and making the WinXP
or the Vista disk the primary master.

Thank's for the reply.

This is how I've got XP and Vista already, at least I think, but Windows
asks which OS I want to run. Nice feature !

When you say Primary Master , explain please. I only am aware of this while
setting up a clean install/partition. Seeing I have my OS's on their own
drives already, how would I accomplish this?

Why should I have to disconect the other two drives when wanting to use say
XP?
Am I literally going to have each dick as c:, instead of c,d,e for example?
I would rather , when booting, be asked whish OS I would like to use, then,
select it.
To keep on disconnecting , I feel after time would kind of wear your
fittings out somewhat. I would be doing this all the time.
I'll check the documentation on the XOSL I've downloaded at any rate.
Thank's,
Dave

See below.

It would be a good idea for you to take a spare disk
and play with XOSL until you are fully comfortable
with its operation.

If you play with hard disks then you must familiarise yourself
with cabling, primary/secondary disk controllers and hard
disk jumper settings. This has nothing to do with OSs!

This is exactly how XOSL works.

No need for that at all after the initial setup phase.

Here, unless I misunderstood you.

'' Furthermore you can keep on booting directly into WinXP and Vista by

or the Vista disk the primary master''.

I think I know what you mean now.
Currently my C: drive [XP Home] is primary master or [0] connection on my
mother board.

Other drive is slave [Vista] or [1] on my mb. This is how I want it.
This is how Dell put it to me since there are no physical jumper settings on
SATA drives v.s IDE drives. I have my IDE [Win 98] set to cable select since
it's the only drive on my PCI card at the present time.

Since I have three drives, you are telling me to add one at a time,
disconnecting the others temporarily until I do the same to the other two
drives, making all three independent?

Would it be any esier to edit the boot.ini and plug in my three disks
accordingly, or no? Yes, I should practice with a spare disk, but I have
OS's on all .

Thank's , and let me know if I got something wrong here.
I haven't had time yet to go over the documentation for the boot loader, and
need to partition all three drives, but they didn't say how much for each
drive.
Need to look over documentation first before anything though.
