XP hangs going into Standby

Hi,

Everything was working perfectly on a new install before updating
the drivers for nVidia's nForce 2 integrated motherboard
functions - network controller, sound, etc.

Everything works great now, too, except that the system hangs on
a blue "preparing to go into Stand by..." screen. The mouse
pointer moves around, but nothing else works. Physically turning
the machine off is the only way out.

I tried the F8 on boot/"use last working version" option, but
that didn't work. Then I rolled back the driver on the network
controller, but that didn't work either.

My thoughts are to scrub the system of all things nVidia, then
try again, or preferably, to find if there is some log I could
access that would tell me what the conflict is. I assume that
something is not willing to give up its active state.

Any insight would be appreciated.

No, there is no log to give that information.

What about the System Event log ? Methinks that *may* provide a clue as
to what's hanging the system.
Standby issues are *usually* related to video adapter drivers.

Under Computer Management/System Tools/Event Viewer/System, I
have Error, Remote Access, event 20106.

Under Computer Management/System Tools/Event Viewer/Application,
there's an entry, Error, nview_info, event 1.

There's also a log available at Performance Logs and
Alerts/Counter Logs, but it needs to be configured, and I have no
idea how to do so or what it does.

The one nVidia service I can see I disabled. The two Remote
Access services I see (Connection Manager and Auto C. M.) I set
to Automatic and are Started.

Under Active Processes, there is no nVidia process that I can
discern. There is a Matrox Powerdesk service (I have three
monitors, on a dual head Matrox AGP and a single nVidia PCI). I
guess I should nuke that entry and see what happens, but no
change has been made in the Matrox drivers.

Seems to me there should be a way to diagnose what's going on
under the hood, rather than the very resource consuming process
of elimination. If there were, I think this problem would be
simple to solve.
