about once every half-dozen startups, windows hangs. i
get to the first screen with the windows logo and the
progress bar at the bottom but it's VERY faint and it
doesn't go beyond that. i have been able to power down
and startup again without a problem. any clue???
suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.

i can TRY starting in safe mode, but what do i do in that
process to ascertain what's causing my problem?

thanks for the information... hope you don't mind the
follow-up question. lol

Have you tried booting in safe mode? Since the problem
is intermittent, you may need to reboot several times to
see what it's hanging on. Intermittent problems can
really be a headache, can't they?
