Slow startup

I installed Roxio Back On Track 3 Suite and then the system hung at startup.
I removed all of that app but am still experiencing very slow startups. I am
runnin XP Home Edition with 1 drive, 1 partition-pretty basic. I have edited
the startup file to just a few. I ran a test without system services enabled
and it booted pretty fast. I am trying to make this run for a few more
months.
When the system starts up it does one of two things. It just hangs with the
hour glass showing when moved over the task bar.
The other situation is that the system starts and displays the items in the
fast start portion of the task bar and the clock in the tray and then it just
sits for 6 to 7 mins. Then it seems to finally process the startup file and
the appropriate icons show in the tray.
I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

Hi Jim,

Can you do a System Restore just before installing On Track 3 Suite ?

No I can't. One of the features of Back On Track is that it takes over for
the windows system restore function if you let it, which I unfortunately let
it do. Thanks for the thought.

Jim,

Do a Search on your system for a file named bcatdriver.sys
If found post back.

I found that utility yesterday and tried it. Nothing stands out for me. I
don't have the file you asked me to check, unless it is hidden and not
showing up on my search.

Hi Jim,

Didn't think you would find the file because it should be removed during the
uninstall of Roxio Back On Track, just wanted to be sure.

Open Regedit, be sure My computer is selected and do a search for "Roxio
Back On Track" without the quotes. You don't have to change anything at this
time, just see what you find if anything.

All the best,
SG

Two suggestions.

Have you tried this approach?
How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353/en-us

Also look for Error Reports in the System log in Event Viewer.
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

With Autoruns a useful feature of the programme is that you can right
click an item and select Search Online to get information about the item
selected.

Hope this helps.
