Slow Startup

I have a PC that is very slow to startup when there are other computers
running on the network. If there are none it takes about a minute to start,
if there are any other computers it takes about 3 minutes. We are not running
any domain just an open workgroup. It runs just fine once it comes up with no
problems. I have disableed all startup programs and it sill does it. I have
scanned for viruses, adware, and spyware and it is clean. I disabled all
services and it came up fine. Can anyone tell me how to track down the servie
that could be causing this or how to get a log with time stamps everytime it
starts a service during startup? I think there is a service trying to run and
then timing out or just being very slow at starting and that is what is
causing the problem. (It is XP Pro with Service Pk2) Thanks for any help you

Sounds like a chip may be running a bit slow to me.

Have you asked the supplier to do a full diagnostic or to supply
diagnostic kit so you can monitor individual machine performance?

Do you have any persistent connections to shares or shared printers?

Yes, I have 3 network printers and 2 networks drives. The strange thing is
that the PC starts just fine when no other computers are turned on in the
network or when I do a restart. But when I just power it up and there are
other computers on it takes longer to boot up. Once it is up it runs fine and
connects to everything in the network just fine.

does this problem occur on other computers on the network as well or is it
just this one?? just one more clarification > the network printers and drives
are these directly connected on the network or are these connected to a
particular computer on the network?

No the problem doesn't happen with any other computer in the network. And all
of the printers and drives are mapped from other computers. There are 2
printers from one computer and both of the mapped drivers are pointing to one
other computer. But when it comes up it can connect to everything just fine.
And it happens wheather one or both of the other computers are up.

Disconnect those network drives from this computer(right click on them in my
computer and select disconnect network drive). Tell me if this works.

Hey yogi, yes that pc restarted much faster after I disconnected the drives.
But I had to reconnect because they are used to access some network
documents. However when I went to disconnect them they all gave me the
message "There are currently files open on 'Driver Letter [connected to
\\location]. If you do not close the files before disconnecting from the
network device, data may be lost." The problem here is that nothing is open
there are no programs running at the time. No program on the machine is
dependant on these drives, nothing fancy here just temples for Act and office
documents are on the network, but nothing is open or runnnig when it gave me
that message. And when I remapped them, restarted and tried to disconnect
again I got the same message.

Any idea what could be causing this?

i wasnt sure it would but good to see that it did work. no, you are not doing
anything wrong. this is a windows inbuilt feature that prompts you if any of
those files are open on the local system or the computer you have have mapped
the drives to. this is one of the data safety features of windows that does
work. sometimes overworks though. the file may not actually be open but you
did access a file right so you will get that message. internally though the
reason may be a genuine one. probably the program that you use does not do a
very good cleanup job. it does not destroy all those file handles created
while accessing those files.(if you dont understand this just try searching
for file handles in your favourite search engine and you would find good
amount of information on it. but what the heck you dont need to understand
it) make sure that you close the files at both ends and then try again. if
you still get that same message and are sure none of those files are open
then just click yes to disconnect those mapped drives.
