XP hangs at shutdown

I have a Dell computer with a 700mz CPU with Windows XP home edition. I
normally leave the computer turned on since I use it every day. Within the
last couple of weeks, if I shut down the computer, it gets to the screen that
says "Windows is shutting down" and just hangs there. I then have to use the
power button to shut down. The computer is 5 years old but seems to work fine
except for this problem. Any suggestions?
