xp hangs at first reboot

Abit Be6 mobo, latest bios
Matrox G400 video card

Using Win 98 for awhile. Want to go to Xp. REformated
drive for clean install. Setup goes fine at first. Loads
files to HD no problem. At first reboot it hangs. Goes
through post fine but hangs as soon as it starts to boot;
just as the windows logo comes up.
When I go to bios and set everything back to default which
also sets bus speed back to 66 it will boot and setup just
fine. Now when I go back to set right cpu 500/100 it will
not boot. IT will boot and run fine at slower bus speed
(66 or 75) not 100.
Anyone have any ideas??????????

Try booting in safe mode so you can see exactly when it
hangs and return with the name of the file it hangs at.

.
When I try to boot in safe mode it scrowls all down the
page with
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)PARTITION(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEMS32
\DRIVERS\ with differant file names here
last one being \agp440.sys and then hangs. If I boot
to safe mode at 66 bus it goes through same thing except
after a few seconds it starts to boot to safe mode

Could posibly be a conflict with the video card, not sure
however. You can try to disable the agp440 service and
see what happens.

1.Insert the Windows XP installation CD-ROM, and then
restart your computer.
2.When the computer starts, press F12.
3.Start your computer from CD-ROM, and make sure that you
select the drive that contains the Windows XP installation
CD-ROM.
4.In the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, select R for
repair, and then press ENTER.
5.Select the installation number for the problem
installation.
6.Type the password for the administrator account of that
installation, and then press ENTER. You receive a
drive:WINDOWS> prompt, where drive is the drive on which
Windows XP is installed.
7.Type listsvc, and then press ENTER.
8.Make sure that the Agp440 service is listed, and that
the startup type is set to "Boot".
9.Press ESC.
10.Type disable agp440, and then press ENTER.
11.You receive a message that the registry setting for
this service was found, and that its current startup state
is "service_disabled".
12.Type exit, and then press ENTER.
13.If you are prompted to start in Safe mode or Normal
mode, start in Normal mode.
14.Log on to your computer.

Thanks for the help;but I am still at a lose. The
sujestion didn't change anything. Strange that it will run
with bus at 66 but not at 100 where it should be.

Try setting your bios defaults to fail safe, and then optimal, return with
your results. Posibly try to reinstall windows while @ 100mhz ide bus. But
im thinking this is a bad piece of hardware. Good luck

Still no go. Well I guess I will have to go back to Win 98
until I decide to get new computer. Strange though Win 98
will run at the correct speed 500/100 with no problem.
