XP freezing at splash screen

Hopefully there is a simple solution here.

Laptop was working this morning, took it to work, boots
up to the splash screen then stalls.

Have tried going into safe mode, but can't get past the
splash screen.

Can get to command line via recovery from XP disk, but
not sure what to do there.
