Small Widows XP Splash Screen

I'm doing some work on a friend's notbook computer and I notice that
when it boots up the Windows XP splash screen is shrunken to a 640x480
rectangle in the middle of a much higher resolution screen. The text
that shows up before the splash screen is shrunken to a smaller
rectangle in the middle of the screen as well. How can I fix this?

There's nothing to fix, that's normal. You seeing the display before the
windows vga driver is loaded.

I don't think it used to do that. It doesn't do it on any other
computer I have or have seen, most of them with flat panel monitors
that have higher resolution.

Sample of one. My Dell laptop has the smaller splash screen too. Why is
this a problem?
