XP freezes when CD/DVD is used

I cannot use any combination of CD/DVD ROM or RAM drive. The drive(s) start
spinning (LED flickers) and within a a few seconds the PC freezes. A soft
boot is not possible. This happens with any type of media inserted and files
types, eg data files, html, pictures, music etc. However, occationally there
is no problem at all. The same media works fine on other XP and VISTA PC.
This fault was present before I had to replace the motherboard recently and
is still present. I naturally suspect XP..... I would be greatful for some
clues. Thanks ..... HW

Go into BIOS setup and check that the CD/DVD drive is being recognized. If
it is a desktop computer a new drive costs less than thirty dollars. A bad
drive can actually damage your other hardware including your new m.b. .

I checked the BIOS. All drive types are correctly discovered. I also swapped
their logical position, ie master and slave. The BIOS is fine. By the way,
the CD-RW was running fine under W2000 on my 5 year-old PC. Appreciate your
thoughts, Allan, but I still suspect XP.

I don't suppose you have a new drive to try?
It could be the driver in XP, but from what you describe, I'd suspect the
drive itself.
Possible even the Power Supply, but that's a stretch.
