I have a similar problem to an earlier post by someone
today. My computer has been formatted 3 times this week
and once a few weeks previous because of many problems.
For no reason what so ever, it will just freeze up. It
sometimes does it when its closing down, or trying to
restore to another point, or even when its totally idle.
It just happens. I think that I have tracked a problem
down to one of the XP updates because one of the times I
did not download all the updates available and this
problem did not occur (just a load of seperate
issues!!!!). i am passed the point of being annoyed. I
am now at the point of throwing this machine out the
window!!! It may be a case of some hardware problems but
I really don't know how to look for it. Can anyone offer
any suggestions as to whether they have received any
problems like this and how they solved them. currently I
am running with XP SP1 which I think is ok so the problem
possibly lies within one of the 15+ updates which
microsoft released after that.

VERY MUCH APPRECIATED ANYONE WHO CAN HELP

There is "always" a reason. In my case, it was improper bios settings. Have
you been in the bios lately? Overclocking by any chance?

I am very interested in what we can find out about this
issue. My laptop freezes all the time ever since I
downloaded the windows xp critical up dates. I have a desk
top and it is fine after downloading updates!!! A tech
told me that there wew lots of software conflicts, how can
this be I have the same things on both my laptop and desk
top, both plenty of memory both full of ram!!

I had trouble with patch 811493 (even after it was fixed) and as long it
wasn't installed on my machine it ran perfectly. This week it started
freezing again. There's a roll-up patch 826939 that I installed this week.
I've taken it back off and, so far, no freezes. My only concern is what
security holes have been left open without it. Hmmm, tough decision--a
secure machine that doesn't work vs. an unsecure machine that rarely
crashes.

If you want to play, you need to learn to troubleshoot.
Each problem is usually different, but the same.

Get all the latest BIOS and drivers
Reset BIOS to default settings.
Remove bds one at a time starting with sound.
try a different video board or older drivers.

use MS approved drivers if available. - my system had a problem with
new nVidia drivers. I went back to the latest WHML (or whatever they
call it) driver and all is well again.

good luck
