XP Freeze: mem usage 100% - ornot virus?

XP has frozen on my Presario about 3 minutes after my first start up on
both 10 and then 11 April 2007. I have to reboot cold using the power
switch since XP does not respond to the start button. After about 4 of
those freeze and cold boot cycles, XP starts to run stable. I contacted the
HP-Compaq tech chat who suggested this is the ornot virus. I Googled "ornot
virus" but see no relevant return. Here is my tech chat:

Welcome to HP Total Care for Desktops. My name is Norvin.k
How may I assist you today? Hi James, how are you doing today?

james rudoy
OS freezes a minute or two after boot up, even if my only
apps are 1 or 2 msie windows. I have to use the power switch to reboot. cpu
usage meter sticks at 100%. What cause? How fix?

Norvin K
Please go to task manager and check which application is
using the max processor.

james rudoy
my tm apps tab only shows app names, no quantities. my
processes tab shows mem usage stats. Biggest are iexplore and svchost.

Norvin K
Thank you for the information.

Norvin K
This is the virus issue, please tell me whether you have
scanned for virus ornot.

james rudoy
not knowingly. i run norton is 2006, windows defender and spy
subtract basic afaik. do they scan for ornot automatically?

james rudoy
my os has remained stable for the last 10 minutes during our
chat. it looks like a repeat of yesterday: freeze-coldboot-freeze-coldboot
3x, then stable run returns.

Norvin K
No, James, you have to run the virus scan. Please perform
the virus scan now. If this does not resolve the issue, you need to perform
the full system recovery.

james rudoy
i just started a norton full system scan. that should take 3
or 4 hours. will you send me a transcript of our chat?

Norvin K
Sure, i will send it. If the virus scan does not resolve the issue, please
perform the destructive recovery. You will lose the data stored on your Pc
when you perform the destructive recovery.
