Computer Freezes

i need some help. whenever i am trying to do something my laptop freezes on me. it doesnt matter if i am surfing the web or just chatting to a friend on AOL instant messenger, it always freezes. the only thing i can do is hold down the power button to let it reboot. the ctrl+alt+del doesnt work and neither does the mouse...everything freezes. could it maybe be a virus? i have tried to run my virus scan but my laptop freezes before its finished. i also have 2 forms of spyware that do work and they say i have zero parasites. i have no idea how to try and fix this problem. i do have Windows XP Home Edition installed...someone please help me

It could also be a heating problem, try to leave more space for
ventilation.
