XP forces logoff at logon.

Currently tried various methods of solving this and I'm at my wits end right
now.

1. When attempting to boot in normal XP, all loads fine until user select
menu. Only one user exists, selecting it forces automatic log out back to the
"choose user" screen.
2. When attempting to boot into safe mode, monitor reports "cannot display
video mode" [LCD] ("out of range" on TV and CRT)
3. Attempting to boot up into Ubuntu using a live CD gives the same cannot
display video mode error.
4. Attempting to boot and reinstall (or repair install) XP from a Dell XP
(PC is delll branded) disk reports being unable to find hard drives.

Just tried another remedy, failed.

5. Ctrl-Alt-Del Del and entering "administrator" didn't work: 'Unable to log
you on because of an account restriction'

If you can access "recovery console" (normally done by booting to xp cd),
in recovery,type:Fixboot Type:CHKDSK C: /R Type:EXIT Let xp start.
Otherwise,tap F8 key on start-up,select safe-mode,enter xp as administrator,
edit user accounts,starting xp.
