XP Fax Basics

hello everyone,

I'm having trouble grasping the basics of using the xp fax console and set up.

So, two basic questions first of all;

1) I think there is some confusion going on regarding the dial up number for
my connection V the fax number of the intended recipient.
How to set up properly is this regard ?

2) Can I use my home telephone number as a test fax number? Or does a fax
number have to be somehow specially designated or configured? ie I would like
to test by trying to fax myself, before trying to fax other people.

Thanks a lot,
lee

Re. #2

Have you ever tried to call yourself on your own phone?.. you dial your own
number and what happens?.. sure you get a conversation with yourself, but
none of it takes place via the phone line..

So it is with FAX..

thanks for those 2 replies Russ and Mike;

I think I see ... basically, because my phone line is active for the dial up
connection, then it appears to be engaged / not available if I try to fax
myself ? Is that right ? ie there is nothing else specifically which makes my
phone number 'unfaxable' ?
Presumably then I can never test by trying to fax myself ?

I'd be grateful if someone reading this in the uk who knows they can receive
faxes, would tell me their fax number so I can give it a test out in the real
world.
I appreciate you probably don't want to put your fax number on here, but
feel free to email me at (e-mail address removed)
(one of my email addresses which is already spammed, so no great loss from
posting it here)

thanks a lot,
lee

If you want to fax, your dial up connection must be free, just like it would
be if you wanted to make a voice call, and no, you still can't fax to your
own number..

If you want somebody to fax, look on the internet for a computer company
that offers contact by fax, and then just send a general enquiry about their
services.. if they answer you by e-mail (assuming that you give them your
e-mail as a contact point, you will know that your fax was indeed
successful..

great, thanks Mike.

As you can tell, I've been confused about my dial up connection here.
I now understand, if I'm right, that my xp fax is just needing to connect
via my modem to my phone line. ie nothing to do with the dial up internet
connection, which indeed should not be active on my phone line at the same
time anyway.

Shame I can't fax myself, but your idea is good and I'll try that.

As you have now found, FAX has less than a whole bunch to do with your ISP..
there used to be fax test numbers, but you would have to search on the
internet for something more local to you than my location (Canada)..

Good luck
